OUTSIDE AND INTRA-INSTITUTIONAL SMOKING

IS SMOKING COMPLETELY PROHIBITED ON CAMPUS?

No, not completely. Smoking is prohibited in:

  • Classrooms, lecture halls and auditoriums, gymnasiums, laboratories, storage areas, mechanical equipment rooms, hallways, corridors, and areas where volatile, flammable, or explosive materials are in use.
  • Common areas, including the snack bar, the Abbey, elevators, reception rooms, client service areas, mail rooms, copier rooms, restrooms, and lounges, except here specifically designated "smoking permitted."
  • All dining facilities.
  • All libraries.
  • Meeting and conference rooms.
  • Residence hall rooms except where specifically designated "smoking permitted."

WHERE IS SMOKING ALLOWED?

Smoking is generally permitted outside of the buildings in areas where receptacles have been placed. Additionally, some private offices, with floor-to-ceiling partitions and doors closed, may be designated by occupants as "smoking permitted" provided sufficient ventilation is present.

IF I ATTEND A MEETING IN AN OFFICE WHERE SOMEONE HAS BEEN SMOKING AND THE ODOR BOTHERS ME, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO?

Yes. In the future, you could suggest that the meeting be held in your office. If that is not possible, inform the individual that you would like to meet in another area.

IF SOMEONE SMOKES IN AN AREA THAT IS DESIGNATED "SMOKING PERMITTED," BUT I MUST BE IN THAT AREA AND I DO NOT SMOKE, DO I HAVE ANY RIGHTS?

You should ask the individual(s) to please stop smoking. The right of the non-smoker to protect his/her health and comfort takes precedence over another person’s right to smoke.

IF I SMOKE, CAN I HAVE SMOKING BREAKS?

There are no "breaks." You can smoke during your lunch period or at any other time you may happen to be out of the building.

IF SOMEONE’S SMOKING IS IN VIOLATION OF POLICY, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

If you feel a person’s smoking is in violation of Gallaudet's policy, please contact the employee’s immediate supervisor.

WHERE CAN I FIND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT SMOKING?

For more information, please contact the HRS Office on Ext. 5352 or refer to the Smoking policy in the Administration and Operations Manual.
